Thanks to the folks who came out to help water the oak saplings and to our own Parks, Recreation, and Neighborhood Services Supervisor Jesse, his son, and Boy Scout Troop 250 for paving the way to smooth trails ahead.

Thanks to all our volunteers who came out last Sunday the 15th., including our District 10 San Jose City Councilmember-elect Matt Mahan, to give the tender loving care needed to keep our natural oasis thriving!
Matt and Jason returning from the top of Blue Oak Hill after leading youth to plant a dozen sites with the acorns that mighty blue oaks, quercus douglassii, will grow — and the 40 lb. bucket of water needed for each oak!
Volunteers provided the watering needed for the many small acorn sprouts, as the rains had not yet provided the moisture that was needed.
New, wire cages, were placed around the growth of small sprouts so that they will be able to thrive in the natural environment.

The City of San José Department of Parks and Recreation and Neighborhood Services is temporarily closing several park locations due to poor air quality for the health and safety of park guests and staff. As an employer, the health and safety of our parks staff is our top priority, and all outdoor activities are being reduced as much as possible.
Closures include the following regional parks:
These locations will reopen as air quality improves and staff is allowed to return to outdoor work. Neighborhood parks remain accessible to the public with the exception of Lincoln Glen, which is under construction. Per AQI – Sensitive groups, such as people with heart or lung disease, older adults, and children should avoid all physical activity outdoors. Everyone else is advised to avoid prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors.

The Friends of Guadalupe Oak Grove Park formed as an alliance of neighbors and park patrons concerned about the long-term stewardship of a uniquely-natural park in San Jose. Guadalupe Oak Grove Park has very little in the way of amenities, such as buildings or equipment, but rather is left in its natural state, complete with beautiful native oaks, wildflowers, and typical Santa Clara Valley flora and fauna.
The Friends of Guadalupe Oak Grove Park have been putting together dedicated volunteer efforts for the past few years, clearing and trimming and cleaning up trails and making certain that Guadalupe Oak Grove Park remains the community treasure that it is intended to be.
Sheep and goats have been brought in to help clear and trim the natural plants in way that helps preserve the wonder of the park without disturbing it or imposing less natural maintenance.
The City of San Jose provides support for these efforts, but with limited funds, there is more work than there is funding, so the volunteer work is even more important. The Friends of Guadalupe Oak Grove Park is seeking donations from people who care about this park and the natural habitat that it uniquely houses. Every dollar counts.

Wow! Thank you Laurie and your high school young men and our usual “Stars” — a lot of ground covered. We may have finished watering our trees for the year and many will now be able to make it on their own for the next couple hundred years. Stay tuned for this fall’s planting events — more oaks and natives shrubs, grasses, and wildflowers.
