The Five Islands in Fontana Park are Ready for Winter!

No, they’re not Zombies emerging from the woods, they’re volunteers.

Halloween Day saw several masked Martin-Fontana Parks Association volunteers meet at the Five Islands in Jeffrey Fontana Park with rakes in hand.  Forty bags of mulch were spread among the islands by the hard working volunteers, assuring that the Islands were tucked in and ready for the winter rains.  To help keep the weeds at bay, the MFPA volunteers spread Preen (a weed preventer that stops weeds from germinating) around the islands.  After running short on mulch, Stacey Winters made a run to Outdoor Supply Hardware to return with enough mulch to finish the job!

Many thanks to Pieter Noordam, Dan and Michelle Judd with son Jared, Stacey Winters, Dave Poeschel, Rich Grialou, Kelly Shepherd and husband, Dave Gonzales, Star Taylor, organizer Linda Wilson, and MFPA Photographer Wayne Opp.  Additional thanks to Pat Burrow who also contributed pictures of the hard working masked team.

A  bench dedicated to Antje Hirt, a former MFPA member who spent many mornings walking her little dog in the park, has provided a quiet place to sit and contemplate for several park walkers since its installation last summer.  Plans are being made to compliment the bench with a Manzanita plant on each side.

Parks, Recreation & Neighborhood Services Strike Team in Action!

T J Martin Park neighbors, with back yards adjacent to the park from Burchell Avenue to Weimar Avenue, woke up to the sounds of chain saws, trucks and heavy equipment at 8:30 am the morning of Thursday, Oct. 8.

After years of allowing the growth of weeds, volunteer tree sprouts, and dense brush build-up, the fence line area was in for a good grooming!  A strike team from Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services (PRNS) brought workers and equipment to clear out the large area that had become a dumping ground for litter, and a nocturnal meeting place for partying.

The large mountain of mulch, deposited three years ago, was moved to the Fleet St. rose garden where MFPA member, Larry Sasscer, spread it among the roses and native plants to deter weed growth and hold in moisture.  Tree canopies were lifted to provide an easy sight line down the fence line while shrubs were pruned or removed to enhance the area.

The PRNS team worked from 8:30 am to noon clearing out and cleaning up the former nuisance area which had been left to grow wild for the last ten years.  Martin-Fontana Parks Association brought the blighted area to the attention of PRNS, and thanks them for their hard work and effort they made to clean it up.  Now it is once again an area of TJ Martin Park where walkers can enjoy the variety of birds and native plants along the fence line.

*Thanks to our MFPA President, Linda Wilson, for the story and photos

Saturday’s Volunteer Rose Pruning was a BIG SUCCESS!

On Saturday the 25th of Jan, with the help of over thirty volunteers and a their hard work, the Jeffrey Fontana Memorial Rose Garden was pruned and weeded. Members of the Santa Clara County Association of Realtors (SCCAOR) provided most of the muscle along with other volunteers.  Now the roses are all set for some beautiful blooms this coming season.

Linda Wilson, the President of the Martin-Fontana Parks Association, provided 10 bags of mulch and some rose food.  MFPA member, Rosy Bowring brought along 2 dozen assorted doughnuts to feed the troops.  Adopt-a-Park’s Sue Bowling was there with the Adopt-a-Park trailer and work supplies.  Thanks also to Mollie Tobias, City of San Jose’s Program Manager for Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services for setting this all up.

Let us not forget who wasn’t there, Patrick Pizzo.

Pat was always there to show everybody how the trimming was done.  We will miss seeing his smiling face and having him show us how to trim a rose bush  Things just weren’t the same with out him being there.

A photo display of Pat was provided by MFPA member, Sunny Wagstaff, showing his many years of service and dedication in making our parks more beautiful with native plants.

We have lost Pat Pizzo

SCCAOR Sept 2014 work-party

Patrick Pizzo, a long time member and guiding light of the Martin-Fontana Parks Association passed away on the 2nd of January 2020 at the age of 75.  If you look around our two parks, you will see many examples of his handy work.  Pat was the brains & brawn behind all the native plant islands located in Jeffrey Fontana Park.  His most extensive creation was the 5 Islands Project near Meridian Ave.

Here is a link to a 2017 article on Pat and his many accomplishments by Our City Forest:  http://www.ourcityforest.org/blog/2017/1/4/the-remarkable-pat-pizzo?fbclid=IwAR0FxrzleTYiHR_K8EacOjotqX71Vqwz0FL73QNzDkcOXa7bj6GjCKz1pU8
